The Berry Family

Glendale, Kane County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1965

The Berry brothers gave Berryville its first name and paid dearly for the frontier. Sons of Jesse and Amelia Berry, they founded the settlement that became Glendale. Three of the family — Joseph, Robert, and Robert's wife Isabella — were killed in April 1866, during the Black Hawk War the Ute waged to hold their homeland; they lie now in Grafton. The violence followed the family beyond Utah: William was shot by a mob while serving a mission in Tennessee in 1884, and John William, carrying mail for Brigham Young, took a bullet he carried until he died.
