Old Rock Schoolhouse

Orderville, Kane County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1959

What Orderville built after the commune ended still tried to serve everyone. When the United Order dissolved, townspeople raised this building in 1886–87 from native limestone and canyon-sawn lumber, on the spot where the Order's blacksmith shop had stood, and used it for both school and church. A new school replaced it in 1938, and the old rock building passed to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers as a relic hall. When the school board bought the ground in 1955 the original came down. What stands now is a replica, rebuilt from the same stone.

What the plaque says

In 1886-1887 after the United Order terminated, a public building was erected of native limestone and lumber from the canyon sawmill. It was used for school and church purposes. In 1938 a new schoolhouse was built and the Old Rock Building given to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for a relic hall. When the school board purchased the ground in March, 1955 the building was torn down. This building is a replica and was erected from the same rocks and other materials. The United Order blacksmith shop was located on this site.
