Submarine Testing
Kootenai County · Idaho
The models are named for the lake's fish. The first large one, Kamloops, a quarter-scale Sturgeon-class submarine, arrived in 1967; Kokanee, a model of the Seawolf, followed in November 1987; and Cutthroat, delivered in 2001, models the Virginia class and is the largest unmanned submarine in the world, about 111 feet long. Every vehicle here is unmanned. The south end suits the work because the inflowing rivers all enter at the north end, leaving water about 1,100 feet deep, a flat bottom and a constant temperature below 100 feet.
