Bayview Limekilns
Kootenai County · Idaho
Lime made Bayview as much as the kilns did. The 1910 census counted 94 people in town, 17 of them working at the Washington Brick and Lime works. Homesteaders sold cordwood in the off-season to fire the kilns and the lake steamboats, and crushed rock came across the bay from the Lakeview quarries by barge; in 1904 one barge tipped near Bayview and dumped more than 40 tons of lime into the lake. When the company finally shut down, it tore up the railroad spur that served the town. The kilns' remains still stand in Bayview.
