One man named both town and boat. Zenas Moody, an Oregon surveyor, formed the Oregon and Montana Transportation Company in 1865, built the steamer and named it for his wife, Mary, but sold out to the Oregon Steam Navigation Company within a year. Its machinery came by wagon across the Big Bend country from White Bluffs on the Columbia. The Mary Moody could carry 55 passengers and 85 mules. The townsite, at the tip of Buttonhook Bay inside Farragut State Park, later went by Steamboat Landing; nothing of it is visible today.
