Gladys Buroker (1914-2002)
Kootenai County · Idaho
She came to Idaho already a pilot. Raised north of Seattle, she soloed at eighteen after five hours of instruction, made parachute jumps with a barnstorming troupe, bought her first plane, a 1933 Travel Air, in 1935, and married her instructor, Herb, in 1937, passing her flight test that November. Before the war she became the first woman instructor in an all-male Civilian Pilot Training Program. She later trained as a licensed practical nurse at Kootenai Memorial Hospital. Her memoir is Wind in My Face, and the Museum of North Idaho has shown her parachute, goggles and helmet.
