Site of the Lighter Wharf at Bolinas
Bolinas, Marin County · California
Nothing marks the site and nothing of the wharf remains, and the trade it served undid it. Lumber from the sawmills at Dogtown went onto lighters here and floated down the lagoon to schooners in deeper water, bound for Gold Rush San Francisco, moving only on the high tide. The logging, and the cattle that followed it, washed silt into the lagoon, and the wharves at its upper end were out of use within a few years. By 1880 a county historian found that not even the stroke of an axe was heard.
