Site of Laurel Hill Cemetery

The bronze named the dead by rank and left out where they went. Some 35,000 burials were dug up in 1939 and 1940 behind six-foot windscreens and moved to Cypress Lawn in Colma, most of them into a common mound that got its memorial obelisk only in 1993. Families who could pay moved their own monuments. The rest were broken up: slabs went into the Marina breakwater and walls along Ocean Beach, and in 1986 some of the granite became the Wave Organ. Now the plaque is gone too, and only its bolt holes remain in the brick.
