Site of Brick Building of the Firm of Mellus and Howard

The society that cosigned most of the bronzes on this street has none at its own birthplace. The Society of California Pioneers was organized here on 31 August 1850, in the brick warehouse the firm of Henry Mellus and William D. M. Howard had put up in 1848, with Howard as its first president and the state's history as its charge. A century later its name was cast on the state tablets up and down Montgomery Street. The state registered this corner in 1950. Nothing marks it.
