Saint Joseph Mission (St'uts'te'wes)
Benewah County · Idaho
The Schitsu'umsh had been told to expect them. Tribal tradition holds that Circling Raven came back from a vision quest prophesying black-robed men who would teach his people of the great spirit, and his granddaughter Siuwheem, Tranquil Waters, was among the first De Smet baptized in 1842. As Louise Siuwheem she is credited in two stories with stopping battles, first with the Spokane and later the Nez Perce. Father Point first said Mass on December 2, 1842, at the people's winter camp where the Spokane River leaves the lake, then moved the mission to their spring camp here.
