Mullan Road
Kootenai County · Idaho
The road's way was cleared at a council at the Coeur d'Alene mission on September 17, 1858. Chief Vincent spoke first; Wright's terms required the Coeur d'Alene to surrender the men who had begun the fight with Steptoe and to give at least one chief and four men, with their families, as hostages. General Clarke, forwarding the treaty, wrote that letting troops and citizens pass through the country had better have been a demand than a term of agreement, but that the Army had the substance. An account printed with the treaty says the Coeur d'Alene kept every provision.
