Joseph Garry (1910-1975)
Kootenai County · Idaho
He was born into a chief's family on the reservation, and served six terms as president of the National Congress of American Indians as well as leading the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians. Through the 1950s he traveled constantly, urging tribes to hold their land, build their own economies and educate their young, and he sat on the tribal council for more than two decades, half of them as chairman. When he died in 1975, the National Congress of American Indians credited him with the Indians keeping their land base and said he had invented tribal government.
