John Mullan (1830-1909) (After the Road)
Benewah County · Idaho
The fortune went largely in a fight over his fees. Mullan's stage venture had been a four-year mail contract from Chico, California, to Ruby City, Idaho, at $75,000 a year. As a lawyer he did well winning federal reimbursements for western governments, and from 1878 he practiced in Washington, D.C., as agent for California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington Territory, then spent years pressing those same states for the fees he believed they owed him. From 1883 to 1887 he was also a commissioner of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions. He died in Washington on December 28, 1909.
