Richmond Park
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA
This park honors a woman who was first through a door long closed. Mignon Barker Richmond became, in 1921, the first Black person to earn a college degree in Utah, graduating from the school that is now Utah State University. She spent her long life — she was born in 1897 and died in 1984 — as an educator, a civic leader, and a tireless worker for her community in Salt Lake City, opening ways for others in a state where Black residents were few and often unwelcome. The park keeps her name, and her example.
