Portolá Expedition Camp at Pilarcitos Creek

Rain pinned the expedition here on 29 October 1769, and the register remembers only that Portolá was ill. The name the men themselves gave the place came three weeks later, on the way back south, when rations were down to a few flour tortillas a day. They called it Llano de los Ánsares, plain of the geese, because hunters walked out one afternoon and killed twenty-two. Costansó wrote that Providence had supplied their needs. Half Moon Bay grew around this creek mouth afterwards. Nothing cast marks the camp.
