Portolá Expedition Camp at Laguna Grande

Nothing marks this camp, and the laguna grande it stood by is under Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir; the state's directions stop at the dam. Crespí's diary for the day's march counts game: bear droppings in the hollow, tracks of what he called large livestock that he decided were bears, and the scouts' word that they had counted fifty deer in one band. Much of that country is still wild because the water companies closed it. The 23,000 acres around the reservoirs are a state fish and game refuge, most of it shut to the public.
