The huts on the north bank were empty because the people who owned them were somewhere else that week. Three days earlier the expedition had passed a village whose residents were out gathering seeds, and on the return in November it found this coast deserted again. The army engineer looked inside, came out covered in fleas, and the stop went into the diaries as Ranchería de las Pulgas. Ramaytush Ohlone families were working a seasonal round. The Spanish wrote the country down as mostly uninhabited. Nothing marks the creek mouth.
