Historical Marker · No. 886

Carolands

Hillsborough, San Mateo County · California

No state plaque stands here; the one cast plate records the National Register listing, and the house opens only for arranged tours. Harriett Pullman Carolan finished it in 1916 on the Pullman railroad-car fortune. Its demolition had been announced, and widely reported as done, when Countess Lillian Remillard Dandini bought it in 1950. After her it passed through a string of owners, and in 1997 one proposed fifteen luxury apartments and threatened to tear it down if refused. Charles and Ann Johnson bought it in 1998 and spent four years restoring it.
