Portolá Expedition Camp at Montara Mountain

Montara, San Mateo County · California

One league on 30 October 1769 and the column stopped. A steep hill closed the beach ahead, a creek ran out at its foot, and mussels covered the rocks below. The diaries named the place Rincón de las Almejas. Coming back south in November with nothing left but flour tortillas, the party halted here a full day for no other reason than to gather more of them. Pioneers cut a road over the hill the next morning. Nothing cast marks the creek.
