Site of Original Mission Dolores Chapel and Dolores Lagoon

The reverse of this marker is dedicated to the Rammaytush, as it spells the Ramaytush Ohlone, and the front's two dates bracket the summer they lost their towns. The party pitched its tents beside Chutchui, a seasonal Yelamu village by the lagoon, and people came in with shellfish and seed. On 12 August, Ssalson raiders from the San Mateo villages burned Sitlintac on Mission Creek and two other towns, and the Yelamu crossed the bay on tule rafts. When the log-and-thatch mission was dedicated in October, most of its intended congregation had gone.
What the plaque says
Site of Original Mission Dolores Chapel and Dolores Lagoon On June 29, 1776, Father Francisco Palou, a member of the Anza Expedition, had a brushwood shelter built here on the edge of a now vanished lake, Lago de los Dolores (Lake of the Sorrows), and offered the first mass. The first mission was a log and thatch structure dedicated on October 9, 1776 when the necessary church documents arrived. The present Mission Dolores was dedicated in 1791.
