Mt. Carmel School & Church
Mt. Carmel, Kane County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1988
When the United Order's true believers seceded in 1875 to found Orderville two miles up the valley, this is the town they left behind — Mt. Carmel, home to families who wanted something short of all things in common. Its 1880 log building served as school, chapel, and dance hall until fire took the structure in 1919; the rock church that replaced it by 1923 still stands on US-89. By then Mt. Carmel's own children were riding a covered wagon to Orderville each day to learn. National Register-listed; tours by appointment through the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
