Old Ephraim Bear
Logan Canyon, Cache County · Utah
Erected by BSA, 1966
For a dozen years a three-toed grizzly the size of a nightmare — nearly ten feet standing, better than a thousand pounds — ruled the high country above Logan and helped himself to the sheep. Old Ephraim was too clever for every trap the herder Frank Clark set, until one August night in 1923 he wasn't. Clark won the duel with seven shots and spent the rest of his life regretting it; he never killed another bear. Boy Scouts raised a stone monument, cut to the bear's own towering height, over the grave where he fell.
