Martha Hughes Cannon
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA
Martha Hughes Cannon did more before breakfast than most did in a lifetime. A Welsh immigrant who earned a medical degree and two more besides, she practiced as a physician in Salt Lake City — and in 1896 she ran for the state senate against a field that included her own husband, and won, becoming the first woman ever elected a state senator in the United States. In office she wrote Utah's early public-health and sanitation laws and served on its first Board of Health. Her home and office stood near this spot.
