Mahonri Moriancumer Cahoon
Murray, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 1998
This grave belongs to a man whose name came out of scripture, by way of a revelation. When Reynolds Cahoon brought his newborn son to Joseph Smith for a blessing in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1834, he asked the prophet to give the child a name. Smith named him Mahonri Moriancumer — and explained that this was the name of the brother of Jared, a figure the Book of Mormon's book of Ether never actually names. The child carried it for life. The moment is the traditional source for the otherwise-unrecorded name of that ancient prophet.
