Magna Community Baptist Church

Magna, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1987

This church has outlived one town and moved twice. Built in 1896 for the Baptists of Mercur, a gold camp thirty miles south, the one-room building followed its congregation out as Mercur emptied — hauled north in 1914 to Pleasant Green, the settlement that would become Magna. It moved once more in 1924 to this corner and took a large addition in 1928, settling in as the first and only Protestant church building Magna ever raised, Baptist by affiliation and ecumenical by practice, a pew for whoever came.

What the plaque says

The Magna Community Baptist Church is the first and only Protestant church building constructed in Magna, and for over 70 years it has served an important role in the religious affairs of the community. The original one-room section of this church was built in 1896 for the Baptist congregation in Mercur, a mining town located approximately 30 miles to the south. In 1914, as Mercur was being abandoned, the building was moved to Magna, which at that time was known as Pleasant Green. The church was moved once again in 1924 to its current location, and in order to accommodate the growing congregation a large addition was built on the east in 1928. The congregation, though affiliated with the Baptist church, has always operated under a spirit of ecumenicalism, accommodating members from a variety of Christian groups.
