Magna City World War II Memorial
Magna, Salt Lake County · Utah
A generation later, the same mills fought a bigger war. Kennecott's Bingham operation produced close to a third of the copper the Allies used in the Second World War, and Magna's concentrators ran around the clock to feed it. With the young men gone to fight, women took places on the mill floor and Kennecott recruited Puerto Rican laborers to close the gap; in 1945 the war effort ran so critical that Washington briefly seized the company's railroad. This monument marks the Magna workers who served in the war their copper helped to win.
