Long Bridges
Bonner County · Idaho
Before 1910 the south shore had a ferry, a rowboat or the railroad trestle, and ranchers around Sagle often ordered their goods from Spokane and had the train drop them rather than make the crossing. The first bridge needed a draw for the lake's steamboats; by the time the second went up, the steamboat trade had dwindled and it needed none. Governor C. Ben Ross came to Sandpoint to dedicate it in March 1934, and its planks ran crosswise, quieter and safer than the first bridge's lengthwise boards. Wartime traffic wore it out by 1956.
