Chinese Railroad Workers
Bonner County · Idaho
Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, mid-construction, barring Chinese laborers from entering the country and denying citizenship to those already in it. The construction camp at Hope drew thousands of workers, as many as a thousand of them Chinese, and the town took its name from the camp's veterinarian, Dr. Hope. Some stayed on; the Twin Woo Company was among early Hope's stores. Chinese railroad workers are buried with early settlers in the small cemetery above Highway 200, long called the Chinese Cemetery, which volunteers have worked to clean up and protect.
