Levi and May Hutton
Shoshone County · Idaho
In 1899 masked strikers took Levi's train at gunpoint and made him haul the dynamite that destroyed the Bunker Hill concentrator at Wardner; he was arrested, never convicted, and lost his railroad job. May answered with a novel in 1900, The Coeur d'Alenes: Or, a Tale of the Modern Inquisition in Idaho. Having won the vote in Idaho, she ran for the state senate in 1904 and lost. Moving to Spokane in 1906 cost her the vote, and when Washington women won it in 1910 she claimed to be the first in Spokane to register.
