Wallace
Shoshone County · Idaho
The town saved itself with the National Register. Led by Nancy Lee Hanson, residents got the whole downtown listed in the late 1970s, which kept highway crews from tearing it down, and the freeway was instead lifted onto a viaduct some 4,400 feet long and 30 feet high along the hillside on the town's north edge. It opened on September 12, 1991. Wallace buried the retired signal with a horse-drawn hearse and bagpipes, and it lies in its coffin at the Wallace District Mining Museum. The intact streets later played the town in the 1997 film Dante's Peak.
