Burke
Shoshone County · Idaho
The street was as tight as the hotel. Burke's only street carried the railroad too, and shopkeepers were said to roll up their awnings to let trains pass. The town reached its peak of about 1,400 people in 1910, the same year that February avalanches wiped out neighboring Mace and struck Burke, killing at least twenty people in the canyon. A fire in 1923 burned much of the lower town, and what was rebuilt stood back from the tracks. Hecla's Star mine, the canyon's last, closed in 1991 and reopened in 2012.
