John Shuman
Tremonton, Box Elder County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1970
John Shuman was one of three farmers who laid out Tremonton in the spring of 1903, choosing a spot at the valley's crossroads where the branch railroad ran. He put up one of the first buildings on Main Street and gave part of his homestead for the town park that still carries his name. The bell here, set on its monument in 1970, is the old town bell — for twenty-five years it tolled curfew to send children home, and rang for fires and celebrations, until an electric siren replaced it in 1936.
