Howard County in the Civil War

Center Point, Howard County · Arkansas
Erected 2016

Howard County's Civil War feud did not end in 1865. Conflict between Confederate sympathizers and Union supporters carried into Reconstruction, and in 1868 Governor Powell Clayton put the area under martial law. On November 14 the state militia seized weapons and supplies from a store at Center Point. The resistance left three dead, twelve injured and sixty arrested, in what the Encyclopedia of Arkansas calls the Battle of Center Point. The county itself did not exist until 1873, when townships from Hempstead, Pike, Polk and Sevier counties were combined.
