Sevier County in the Civil War
Belleville, Sevier County · Arkansas
Erected 2016
In 1860 Sevier County counted 7,150 white residents and 3,366 enslaved people, about a third of everyone living there. Both of its delegates to the 1861 secession convention either owned enslaved people or came from families that did. No battle was fought in the county, but its government kept receiving appeals for help from families whose fathers and sons were in the army. The lead and iron pyrite that served the Confederacy did not grow into an industry: when miners tried antimony, copper, lead and zinc in the early twentieth century, none of the attempts produced a boom.
