Hope Rising - To Lift a Nation 9/11 Memorial
Sandy, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 2011
On the worst day, three New York firefighters found a flag in the wreckage and raised it — a small, defiant act a photographer caught and the country held onto. This nine-foot bronze in Sandy re-creates that moment. It anchors the Utah Healing Field, where every September some three thousand flags go up on the promenade, one for each person killed on September 11, each carrying a card with a name and a life. The display began here in Sandy in 2002 and has since spread to more than a thousand fields across the country.
