Hatch Ward Building and Bell
Hatch, Garfield County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1988
When the moved town of Hatch settled onto its new site, it built a church to match. The Latter-day Saint ward house went up on this lot in 1904, a vestibule was added in 1910, and the congregation bought a bell with their donations. For decades it hung in the tower and did a frontier bell's several jobs at once — calling worshippers, opening school, and marking every civic and social gathering the town held. School met in the building until 1913. The ward house came down in 1983, but its bell was kept and stands here.
What the plaque says
In 1904 the Hatch L.D.S. Ward building was erected on this lot. A vestibule was added in 1910 and the bell was purchased with donations from ward members. For many years it hung in the tower and rang out for all civic, social and church activities. School was held in the building until 1913. The building was razed March 3, 1983 when the new ward meeting house was built.
