Gould's Sheep Shearing Mill
Hurricane, Washington County · Utah
Erected, 2004
For a few decades this dusty spot east of Hurricane may have been the busiest sheep-shearing yard in the West — some said the world. Utah's sheep herds had exploded near the turn of the century, and starting in 1910 the corrals at Gould's drew flocks from across the southern half of the state: Cedar City, Panguitch, Kanab, Kanarra, the Long Valley towns. In shearing season it roared: thousands of animals, crews working the clippers, wool baled for the railroad. The wool market faded, and so did the yard. Now it is mostly quiet ground with a big story.
