Flag Rock
Farmington, Davis County · Utah
High on the mountainside above Farmington, a rocky outcrop called Flag Rock became a September 11 memorial almost by accident. The climb to it from the top of State Street gains about 1,353 feet — the height of the World Trade Center towers. Each year on the anniversary, Farmington firefighters make the climb, retracing in elevation the ascent their New York counterparts made into the burning towers. The flag that named the point sits on national forest land, and its right to stay there has been quietly contested for years. The mountain keeps the vigil anyway.
