Ebner's Hotel

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

Charles and Frank Ebner built this themselves in 1856, thirty-six rooms, and put a cupola on it high enough to be seen from the water. Rivermen coming up from the delta used it to know they had arrived. Sutter drank in the brothers' saloon and lodged upstairs. By 1863 they had leased the hotel out to concentrate on the liquor trade Charles ran from the basement, which tells you which business they thought had a future. What stands at the address now is a reconstruction, and nothing explains that.
