What Cheer House

Sacramento's answer to the floods was to lift the city. Through the 1860s and 1870s crews raised the streets on fill and jacked the buildings up to meet them, and this one went up fifteen feet. It was Sackett's Hotel first, then the What Cheer House, then the Grand, and it held state offices in 1855 before most of those names attached to it. The building is still here and still standing fifteen feet above the floor it was built on. Nothing on it records that.
