Carlisle Family Historical Marker
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 2002
Three Carlisle brothers — Joseph, John, and Richard — took up the ground between 700 West and the Jordan River in the 1850s and '60s, farming and dairying its bottomlands. They also planted mulberry trees and tried their hand at raising silkworms, part of Utah's short-lived push to spin its own silk. A five-room brick schoolhouse bearing the family name taught local children from 1905 to 1923, and Carlisle Lane became the neighborhood's path down to the river for fishing and swimming. The marker now stands along the Jordan River Parkway Trail.
