Historical Marker · No. 2932
Bryce Canyon Airport
Bryce Canyon, Garfield County · Utah
Erected by NA
The hangar here is built of logs — ponderosa pine, notched and stacked like a pioneer cabin, for a building meant to shelter airplanes. Garfield County put it up in 1936 as a WPA project, the federal government paying part and local men donating the labor, all to fly tourists to Bryce Canyon — a national park since 1928, and still one of the hardest places in the country to reach. The first airmail left in 1938. The log hangar still stands, on the National Register now, and small planes still carry sightseers over the hoodoos.
