Yorba-Slaughter Adobe

Chino, San Bernardino County · California

Raimundo Yorba built this between 1850 and 1853, and it is still here for an unglamorous reason: a daughter decided it would be. Fenton Mercer Slaughter bought it in 1868 and farmed the Chino flats from it, and after his death his daughter Julia Slaughter Fuqua kept the adobe as a memorial to her father rather than letting it go the way of every other rancho house in this valley. Preservation before there was a word for it, done by one person.
