Historical Marker · No. 4373

World War Veterans 1917-1918

Bicknell, Wayne County · Utah
Erected, 1939

Wayne County sits about as far from anywhere as Utah gets, and still it sent this many men to the First World War. The monument's roll runs long for so small a place — dozens of names, the same families over and over: Browns and Brinkerhoffs, Allens and Allreds, Hankses and Paces. From ranches and farms tucked under the red cliffs of Rabbit Valley, these young men went off to a war being fought an ocean and a continent away, in a Europe most of them had never imagined seeing. The list is the community, written out in full.
