Wilford Woodruff and Josephine Barbara Baumann Knight
Santa Clara, Washington County · Utah
Erected, 2012
The second Swiss generation of Santa Clara lives in this couple's story. Josephine Baumann was born here in 1890 to families who followed the original colony out from Switzerland; at thirteen she stood interpreter for grandparents who never learned English. The Baumanns held the Jacob Hamblin rock house longer than any other family, growing Isabella grapes — sacramental wine for the church until it switched to water, then bottles sold to California-bound travelers. Josephine met Wilford Woodruff Knight at a town dance, married him in 1910, and raised all seven of their children in Hamblin's old house.
