Site of Stage and Railroad (First)

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

Two systems changed hands on this corner. Through the 1850s it was the terminal for the stage lines running out of Sacramento to the mines, and in 1855 the Sacramento Valley Railroad made it a railhead as well, so for a while a passenger stepped off one and onto the other inside a single block. The stages kept running to the places the rails did not reach. Nothing marks the corner and no plaque was ever placed on it.
