US Army Ranger and Air Force Memorial
Antelope Island, Davis County · Utah
On the stormy night of October 29, 1992, four special-operations helicopters lifted off from Hill Air Force Base for a training run across the Great Salt Lake. In rain and lightning, the fourth struck the water off Antelope Island's north tip at nearly 140 miles an hour and exploded. Twelve of the thirteen aboard were killed — five Army Rangers and seven Air Force combat controllers, most based half a country away. The lone survivor, the pilot, was paddled ashore by Rangers in inflatable kayaks. This granite marker near the causeway keeps their names and faces.
