The panel's hostage story comes in more than one version. The men who stopped Thomas Durant's car were some three hundred graders and tie cutters discharged by the contractors and never paid, and a telegrapher kept them informed of the special train's approach. The panel puts the stop on May 6, 1869; a Rawlins telegrapher, Robert Fulton, later fixed it at May 7. One account adds that a Salt Lake banker wired Fort Bridger for troops and that a telegrapher took the message off the wire, so none came.
