Piedmont Kilns

Uinta County · Wyoming

The three kilns the panel calls one of the best remaining sets were a small share of a local industry. More than forty kilns once worked in the country around Piedmont, and in 1873 they were estimated to turn out over 100,000 bushels of charcoal a month. Byrne's five stood beside Piedmont Station, a helper-engine terminal with a roundhouse, water tank and telegraph office. The state owns the kilns; the ghost town around them is private land, and the Byrne family cemetery is still a registered cemetery.
