Town of Piedmont

Uinta County · Wyoming

The panel's young girl was Martha Canary, later Calamity Jane, and her own 1896 pamphlet is the main source for her time here. She wrote that after her father died in Utah she reached Fort Bridger on May 1, 1868, and went on to Piedmont with the Union Pacific. She was about sixteen. Accounts differ on how much of her family came with her: one has her shepherding five younger siblings, another has her leaving at least two behind. She later dated her nickname to an army campaign of 1872 or 1873.
